Zie nu ook dit bericht in Haaretz over de open brief van Amoz Oz, David Grossman en andere Israëlische schrijvers, kunstenaars en intellectuelen aan de Israëlische premier Netanyahu: 'Abolish This Sin': Amoz Oz, David Grossman and Hundreds of Israeli Intellectuals Slam Nation-state Law.Pianist en dirigent Daniel Barenboim was, samen met Edward Said, oprichter van het West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, dat bestaat uit jonge Palestijnse, Arabische en Israëlische muzikale talenten. Vorige week keerde hij zich in een betoog in The Guardian tegen het besluit van het Israëlische parlement, de Knesseth, om van Israël een Joodse staat te maken: This racist new law makes me ashamed to be Israeli.
Het besluit dus dat afscheid neemt van de Israëlische Onafhankelijkheidsverklaring uit 1948, waarin het principe van rechtsgelijkheid van al zijn burgers werd vastgelegd. Waarmee Israël nu, in 2018, een apartheidsstaat is geworden.
Een tragische ontwikkeling, helaas onderdeel van een ontwikkeling in veel landen, die ingaat tegen de grote na-oorlogse trend van democratie en mensenrechten. Barenboim over Israël:
Does occupation and domination over another people fit the declaration of independence? Is there any sense in independence for one at the expense of the fundamental rights of the other? Can the Jewish people, whose history is a record of continued suffering and relentless persecution, allow themselves to be indifferent to the rights and suffering of a neighbouring people? Can the state of Israel allow itself the unrealistic dream of an ideological end to the conflict instead of pursuing a pragmatic, humanitarian one based on social justice? (...)
we have a law that confirms the Arab population as second-class citizens. It follows that this is a very clear form of apartheid. I don’t think the Jewish people lived for 20 centuries, mostly through persecution and enduring endless cruelties, in order to become the oppressors, inflicting cruelty on others.
